Most waterjet manufacturers have water quality specifications. Poor water quality is like adding abrasive to your water, which accelerates wear on every component the water encounters: High Pressure Intensifier components, Bleed Down Valve components, High Pressure tubing and fittings, On/Off Valve components and Cutting Head Orifices. There are two important factors when understanding water quality: Suspended Solids and Total Dissolved Solids (TDS).
Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) – refers to sub-molecular particles or ions that are in solution in water. Dissolved solids include hard elements such as silica and calcium which can precipitate out of water as scale. This scale can act as abrasive in the system and wears on components. It is important for waterjet users to understand TDS levels of the water being fed to the high-pressure pump.
The TDS testing Pen (16062) is an easy and inexpensive way to test and continually monitor your water.
